Virtual Traffic Simulator
The combined Computer Science and Digital Media master project “Virtual Traffic Simulator” aims to replicate Bremen’s district of Borgfeld as a virtual environment. Originally this was primarily intended for testing the AI of autonomous cars without having to bring it out onto the road, however now it was developed into a full set of tools to analyze the virtual traffic and control the environment of the simulation.
Project participants painstakingly recreated the street layout of Borgfeld in Roadrunner, modelled the buildings in Blender, and of course added scripts to display data and control the simulation. This was all tied together using the Unreal Engine based CARLA simulator, while also integrating SUMO to improve traffic handling. To maximize the accuracy of the simulation, public transit was modelled as well, going so far as to model the particular model of busses used in Borgfeld with detailed textures created in Substance Painter.
