Agenda of the Methodology Task Group Meeting in Amsterdam

Dear CoFI Friends,

In addition to the previously announced Agenda, there will also be a
presentation by Magne Haveraaen:

	Domain specific languages and software architectures
	- a challenge for CASL

The use of appropriate domain specific languages (DSL) is being
acknowledged as important in reducing software development costs.  The
development of a DSL is a demanding task, and should be considered a
separate activity from application program development. When domain
specific concepts have been identified, they must be provided as a
programming language and supported in order to be used.  Most modern
programming languages have the expressibility needed for defining domain
specific concepts.  Implementing the domain specific concepts as packages
in such a programming language provides the DSL as a domain specific
embedded language (DSEL). A good choice of software architecture is
instrumental in reducing the development cost and enhancing the usability
of such packages. Then application program development may benefit from
the DSL in a well-supported framework. CASL has the features needed to
play a prominent role in this process:
 - algebraic specification language and support tools for investigation of
   domain oriented concepts.
 - architectural specifications for the investigation of software
   architectures.
What we need are methodologies that show how to apply CASL in the
development and structuring of DSLs.


Please note also that the previously announced forthcoming note M7 will not
be installed before the meeting take place, but will be distributed to the
CoFI participants and installed later on.
